Hey. My mother-in-law cat had three kittens. one of them i am going to bring home when it get 6 weeks old. My inlaws yard are covered with ticks and everytime i go up there to love on my kitten she always has some ticks on her. i pull them off but the only thing that worrys me is the disease they carry like how do i know when she gets sick after shes been bitten. i have read up on ticks but they mainly talk about the symptoms and how to take care of them on people.i am fixing to bring this kitten home in a couple of weeks and i don't want to bring it home sick and it being around my other cat i already have in the house. please help me. i hope you can understand what i am writing.

There are a lot of websites with information on ticks and the diseases they carry. If you are worried about Lyme disease, the cat may not show it for 2 to 5 months anyhow. (It isn't really that common in cats though.) This is the page I've found with the most information regarding ticks and animals: http://www.peteducation.com/monthfoc...uitoes_499.htm And this is a map from the CDC showing the areas in which ticks carrying Lyme Disease have been positively identified or reported. The best thing is really to keep the ticks off the animal. Also make sure when you remove them to remove them using a safe method like the one described here: http://www.peteducation.com/flea_tick/remove_tick.htm |

There are flea AND tick collars available. I also believe there is a flea/tick spray.

Please Please be very careful about putting any kind of spray or bug repelant on the little ones! One of the members of another list I belong to just wrote in to warn that the product she used even though it said it was safe for an eight week old kitten hers suffered burns so bad to the application sights that they had to be flushed and the kitten in now on anti-biotics and steriod cream to help it heal and ward off infections. Just my two cents! Best Wishes! ------------------ Leslie-Ann, Moderator, Cats, Dog Behavior and Breeds, Herbal Remedies, Pet Memorial, and Just for Kids. |
