Default Breeding 101

This is what I have learned about breeding.

1. Do you have an exceptional representative of the breed - great temperament, conforms to the breed standard - with no disqualifying faults? If yes go to step 2. If the answer is "NO" you should not breed your dog.

2. Is your dog healthy without any genetic defects? Eyes, heart, thyroid, hips, joints, von Willabrands negative, etc. If the answer is "YES" go to step 3. If your dog has any medical problems you should not breed your dog.

3. Contact your breed club and get as much information as you can about code of ethics breeders and compare pedigrees with them. If your pedigree has worthy dogs in it with obedience and/or conformation titles, the answer is "YES". If your pedigree does not contain titled dogs, you should not breed your dog.

4. If you have answered yes to all three questions, and you can find a good pedigree to complement your dogs, find out what the criteria are from the partner's owner.

Generally, the easiest thing in the world is to make a mistake and breed a dog for the wrong reasons. If you answered No to even one of the above questions, you should reconsider breeding.

Good luck.
