I am currently selling my house (long list of reasons) and moving closer to where I work. I cannot afford a house within the city limits, so I will most likely rent--possibly get a condo. It must be affordable, of course, but I am trying to get something with a small fenced yard for my dog. She loves to sunbathe, and I wouldn't really be able to just put her outside without a porch or something. The problem is that I am considering a floor apartment because I worry about my 125 gallon tank leaking or sinking through the floor! Most floor apartments and condos don't have a fenced patio. Now the real trouble: apparently American Bulldogs are on the 'aggressive dog' list for most of these places. I recognize that Pit Bulls are usually banned--I've met some of these beautiful dogs, but their reputation has been destroyed by misuse of the breed. Some places even ban Shepherds, Rotties, Chows, etc. I think that dogs are aggressive by temperment and training, not breed--and I don't remember seeing Bulldogs on the top 10 aggressive list ever! I have been traveling with my dog recently, and she has shared homes with 3 other dogs. The other dogs (Pomeranian, Shepherd mix, and Lab/Dalmation mix) were the growlers, not my dog. She has stayed in her own home with 3 other dogs as well with no incidents--even at playtime or feeding time. Does anyone know of such lists or articles out there? I'm stuck with a very limited window of places to live now, but I'm not giving up my dog!

Bad dogs are not born, there is no genetic mutation present in certain dog breeds that make them turn against their owner or reach out and bite their latest victim. Bad dogs are created, usually by the people who raise them, less often by unscrupulous breeders who deliberately or unknowingly breed unsound temperaments to another unstable temperament. Every dog is a product of his environment. Every puppy born is born innocent of future charges levied against him by the public. What will happen when certain parties have their way and the latest "dangerous" breed is eradicated? There will be no more Pit Bulls, what will take their place? When all the Doberman Pinschers are gone, what breed will be next? I'll tell you. America's sweetheart, the Golden Retriever, will be next. As long as the owners are allowed to get a dog and raise it to be a monster, any dog breed can take the next spot on the Banned Breed List. Labrador Retrievers and Standard Poodles have the same amount of teeth as a Chow, and put just as much pressure on as a Poodle. But nobody fears these dogs. Cocker Spaniels and other small breeds have unbelievable bite records, yet people don't panic at the thought of facing one on the street. |

I have to agree with the last part. Whenever I am walking my dog--especially past someone with a smaller dog--they ask me, "Is your dog friendly?" I always reply, "Yes, is yours?" They are usually taken aback, as though it is an insult in their direction. I have been around all types of dogs my whole life including those on the "aggressive breed" list. The three times I have had a dog snap at me, the breeds were Pomeranian, Beagle, and Jack Russell Terrier. The last one clamped down on my thumb in the middle of a belly rub and left my nail black and blue for months. I know that the bigger the dog the bigger the bite, but I'd rather not be bitten at all.

I work every day to fight BSL, any type of Breed Profiling. Where are you going to live? Let me have more details and we'll see what we can do to help you. Don't move anywhere that you dog is not allowed. Imagine how awful his life and yours would be with constant harrassment becuase of him being a type of dog. It is so sad.

I spend every morning writing and calling different municipalities who are proposing breed specific laws. It is getting out of hand. Ohio and Alabama have found that genetically there is no difference between breeds, there is no mean gene. So the best thing we can do is stay on top of these awful laws and rules. I am here to help anyone having this problem.

Wow I'm so glad other people agree with my point of view on here! In my city they have banned the ownership of pit bulls based on some attacks in the past few years. I have this argument with people all the time; when you actually look at the incidents of dog attacks in the area, pit bulls are not even close to the top of the list! But for some reason, because there were a few attacks close together, they get a total bum rap. I think its brutal; if you teach any dog to be mean and aggressive, or you mistreat it, then you will be more likely to get a dog who bites. End of story. The breed has NOTHING to do with it.
