I have 29 gal <top fin brand> aquarium, i havent set it up, I'm new in african chiclid. I'm going to have 4 frontosa around 3-4 inch. I use top fin undergravel filter and hagen fluval 203 filter, and air pump. #How long should i set it up before move the fish in? #How can I know whether it is female or male frontosa? #Is my tank to small for 4 frontosa? #What kind of light is good for the frontosa (6500k or 10000k or 50/50, etc)? #How can I control the PH of my water, how to add the PH or decrease it? #What kind of diet good for frontosa? #What the perfect temperature for them? #Should i use rocks for hiding place in my aquarium or not ? thx for ur time.... |

ah, Frontosa the King of the African lake cichlids! I think that tank is too small for 4 fronts they get up to 15 in. The only way to tell sex is through behaviour. The female is larger and both have a nuchal hump. They love rocky structures to hide in, makes them feel secure. The water should be around 8.0 ph and moderately alkaline. Id say keep the temp around 77 f and they would probably be okay in a 55 gall or so. Have fun I think frontosa have so much grace and dignity the blue/black ones glow with sort of an ethereal quality. ------------------ Paula Neswick |

They like a higher protine diet. That tank will hold for for about a year or so they grow very slowly, but do, as mentioned before, get very large. They are a pretty tolerant fish, you can get kits for testing and maintaing water quality at most any fish store. You really cant tell sex untill they get much bigger, unless you are an expert at sexing and can look at their vents and tell.
