I find that adding a bit of aragonite gravel (normally used in reef tanks) to my freshwater tank is enough to keep the pH buffered, and the alkalinity within range. In my marine tank, I use a carbonate/bicarbonate buffer (Kent). This, along with the dissolving oolitic aragonite, maintains both hte pH and alkalinity.
