Tropical plants in Goldfish aquarium?

A friend has few common goldfish in a 150 gallon fish tank. Now that his financial conditions have improved he is willing to upgrade the tank with additions like lighting and aquatic plants.

Couple of days back he was asking me if plants did any good to the "atmosphere" of his tank, with reference to the goldfish? Does any one have the answer?
