Default Re: Bloated Gerbil

I have a 3 year old female gerbil and in the last day her abdomen has become at least double the size. She is moving around and eating healthely. I checked with two petstores and they have heard nothing that compatres to this. Through the years that I have raised gerbils I have come across many diseases and health problems but I have never seen something quite like it. Could some one please help me I have no idea what I should do. She does not look like she is in pain but she is bloated up fairly bad. She is not in with any males and her diet is consistant.
Thanx for any help/ pointers.

If you are absolutely sure your female is not pregnant, then it is probably a tumur. you said your gerb is 3, that is old for a gerb. life span usually 2-3 yrs. I have had one get a tumur before and it got all bloated like yours. It is not a common thing in gerbs. Hope i have helped a little!

After speaking with some other gerb breeders about your problem, here is what we came up with. Congestive heart failure, or blocked or twisted bowel. The only thing you can do is to take her to a vet. I know that is not always an option for people who can't afford a vet visit, for an older animal. By the way it could also still be a tumer. I'm sorry about your predicament :-( I know it's hard, you do get attached!

Thank you for doing some research. I am going to contact a vet today and ask some questions. I took her to a petstore and the guy there said that if he new it wasn't possible than he would say that she was pregnant. That is deffinetly not the case because she has lived alone for about year, the only time she has been with another gerbil is when her buddy was alive. That was about a year ago and she was also a female. Also another thing that I don't get is thesuggestions that you gave me (at tumor, bowl block ect.) wouldn't that affect her physical capabilities? She is acting normal and shows no sign of detrieration. I will get back to you though on what the vet suspects.

I have a little bit of bad news. This morning I discovered some blood around the stomach. She still doesn't look like she is in any pain. The vet that I phoned was not very helpful, actually I never even got the chance to talk to the vet because the person at the front counter was too stuck up. I hate it when people don't listen to me just because I may be a kid. They think that I have no clue what I am talking about. Anyways she made me quite mad. My mom is going to phone again today afterwork and see if she can talk to the vet. The gerbil, besides the blood, has been looking a little better because the inflamation has gone down slightly. I have been keeping track of daily measurements on her and comparing them to another average sized female gerbil. Should I put some polysporne on the bloody parts? I have cleaned them up with some water as best as I could. Thank you for any info and ideas.

Hi,
Your gerb would not nessesarily be showing any signs of pain if it were heart faliure. now that you saw blood i would have to say it is a uterine tumer. was the blood on her belly, or near her female parts?

Hi,
I have some bad news. The gerbil died yesterday. It was sad to see her go but she at least didn't have to suffer anymore. She went downhill fast. The blood was around her "female parts". I would like to know what was wrong but the stupid vet still has not caslled me back. I have tried several times to call the office always getting the respons "i will take a message and she will get back to you." I want to find out what went wrong and what to do if it is a reocuring thing.
Thank you for all of your help.
