Does a chihuahua count? After I move I plan to get a prairie dog, or a chinchilla.

I bought my son a Russian hamster which I was assured was male when he was only small. The next day I was at work when my ex called me to tell me it was having babies! That and its brood went back to the store in a heartbeat.

Is it hard to tell the sex of a hamster or if it's pregnant? I mean really....you rely on the guy in the store to know things like that.
