I have in freshwater 9- 20 gallon tanks, 9- 15 gallon tanks, 4- 40 breeders, a 150 gallon, and a 75 gallon, and all get 50% water changes once a week. My marine tank, a 54 corner, gets a 50% water change once a month. I gravel clean each tank during the water change. Total time is about 1 hour per week to do all of this. A bit more if I am doing the salt water tank. Frank M. Greco Professional Aquarist http://www.frankmgreco.com http://www.franksaquarium.com |

50 percent? I change that much only if the nitrates are creeping high. I test everything weekly before changes, and have no problems usually. Ammonia and nitrites are always nil. pH holds fine, too. My 30 gal livebearers gets 10 gal weekly. The 55 is a month old, and parameters hold well with 10 gal a week (so far), but it is lightly stocked. The 30 gal cichlids get 15 bc it's more fish. The 10 gal only has 3 bettas, so I'll do 2-3 gal. They have a filter and I drop the food in practically flake by flake bc they go for food so slowly and won't pick off the bottom. |

I didnt think you were supose to change the water over 25% in a shot. I have a 35 long and 75 gallon and do about 25% every approx. week week and 1/2 - or whenever the water lever starts to run a little low and you can hear the water trickling too loudly - which ever comes first each water change I do a little housekeeping by vaccuming out the gravel. I dont have an over crowding problem so the tanks dont get too messy. |

We do 30% weekly on a 75 a 55 two 29's two 10's one 15H and one 20H (and sometimes a 5 gal used for isolation.) Sheesh! It sure looks like a lot of work when you write it all down.

I've been using straight tap water (New York Water Co.) for about 3 years now with no bad effects. I add Kordon NovAqau prior to each water change. I know I am taking a risk and one day this may catch up to me, especially during the summer when water companies use more chorine to kill off bacteria in the water supply. Some members in my aquarium society use RO systems or even vat water in large quanities and let the water sit for a few days prior to using it for water changes. I just don't have the room in my house to place a vat. (The wife already comments on how much room the tanks take up.) |
